Favorite things about your job: Being in the community, talking to people and helping them. I like knowing that I am helping make the city safe. Several people my age have told me that they are proud of me for serving as a police officer. That makes me really happy because I want to represent the job in a positive way.
What would you say to current high school juniors and seniors who are considering a career in criminal justice field? I would encourage them to consider becoming a police officer. Helping others feels good. It is a good career, good pay and benefits and a great way to make a difference in people’s lives. Police work has had some harsh criticism but I would say to others considering this field to try it, work hard and don’t give up.
What are your career goals? I would like be a sergeant and continue to learn about the field.
What did it mean to receive a scholarship from the Officer Jason D. West Scholarship Fund? It meant a lot to me. It helped in my first two years of college and paid for the police academy that started my career. I am very grateful. Now that I am working in the field, I meet people who knew Jason and they tell me about him. I feel like I can help keep his spirit alive by doing this work.
